What is Chlorella

In summary, Chlorella is a single-celled green algae that grows in fresh water.

Chlorella is a member of eukaryotic organism (true nucleus plant), which has been on earth since the pre-Cambrian period over 2 billion years ago. It is not a sexually reproducible plant but a unicellular, freshwater green alga, which divides itself rapidly by four times every 20 to 24 hours. (From the latest gene analysis of Chlorella, it was discovered that that 540 million years ago Chlorella and Chlamydomonas diverged from a common ancestor).

Chlorella is so small (3 to 8 micrometers in diameter) that it was only discovered at the end of the 19th century. At that time, chlorella was named after’chlor’ which means green in Greek and’ella’ which means a small thing in Latin.

There are many species of chlorella, but Chlorella pyrenoidosa was selected by Sun Chlorella Corporation to make the flagship product, Sun Chlorlella® ‘A’.

The word ‘Algae’ is Latin for ‘seaweed’ and today refers to a wide ranging group of water plants. Some, like chlorella are tiny microscopic organisms, whist some kelps can measure more than 50m long.

  • There are more than 25,000 known species of algae
  • Algae is said to be responsible for 90% of the photosynthesis on earth
  • Algae is the first link in the food chain
  • Fossilized algae can be dated back to more than 1.5 billion years

C.G.F. A valuable component only found in chlorella

One of chlorella’s unique properties is a phytonutrient called C.G.F. (Chlorella Growth Factor). C.G.F. is a nucleotide-peptide complex found in the nucleus of the chlorella cell. Notably, the nucleic acids produce new chlorella cells and control everything from division, growth and production of each cell.

  1. Sun Chlorella Product Quality and Integrity

At Sun Chlorella, our mission centers on the health and safety of our customers is most important to us. This is why we develop our products using only the best quality ingredients, and our government-approved manufacturing process undergoes rigorous inspections at every step. In a nutshell, we’re all about product integrity.

  2. Chlorella in the Making

After transferring preserved strains of the Chlorella pyrenoidosa (Sun Chlorella strain) species to slant cultures, they are placed under artificial light and allowed to multiply under optimum temperature conditions.

  3. Premium Chlorella Flask Culture

Chlorella propagated in slant cultures is transferred to flasks, which are placed under artificial light and supplied with air containing carbon dioxide. The chlorella cells divide while undergoing photosynthesis. Each time the chlorella in the liquid culture medium rises to a certain concentration, it is transferred to successively larger flasks where culturing continues.

  4. Premium Chlorella Seed Culture

Chlorella grown indoors is moved outdoors, where it is allowed to culture in the natural environment. The chlorella continues propagating under the sunlight in circular concrete pools with agitators. As the concentration rises, the chlorella is moved to successively larger pools.

  5. Premium Chlorella Main Culture

When seed cultures are ready, the chlorella is transferred to main culture pools, which are 36 meters in diameter. The agitators in these circular concrete pools constantly stir the cultures to ensure maximum exposure to sunlight. Culturing in these pools is carried out by carefully controlling the feed amount of culture medium (the nutrient for chlorella cells) in accordance with weather conditions. Water used in the culture pools originates in mountains over 3,000 meters high. In addition to its stable quality and amount, this water is free of contaminants and has low hardness.

  6. Chlorella Filtering

Chlorella grown in the main culture pools is harvested after attaining the prescribed concentration. Once the foreign matter that has entered the pools during culturing is filtered out, the steps of dehydrating by centrifugal separators and washing are repeated. The chlorella is then filtered for the last time, and once we verify its purity, is finally ready to be concentrated.

  7. Opening Chlorella Cell Wall

The DYNO®-Mill Process — the cell wall pulverization manufacturing method developed by Sun Chlorella – finally solved the problem of chlorella’s poor digestibility. The tough fibrous cell wall works like a barrier, preventing us from efficiently digesting the chlorella for its optimum health benefits. The DYNO®-Mill, a machine that physically pulverizes the rigid walls of chlorella cells, works by agitating the small and hard spheres inside its mill cylinder containing the chlorella liquid concentrate, causing a partial pressure difference to build in the fluid. The cell walls are broken when the chlorella cells instantly move from the high pressure to the low pressure area, rapidly expand, and finally burst. This newly pulverized chlorella serves as the basis for the high quality & integrity of Sun Chlorella products.

  8. Concentration and Sterilization

Chlorella contains an enzyme called chlorophyllase that produces pheophorbide, a substance which causes photohypersensitivity. This process deactivates chlorophyllase and sterilizes the chlorella by mixing steam into the chlorella concentrate to accomplish a quick high-temperature treatment.

  9. Drying

In general,’spray-drying’ is the method widely used to dry chlorella. Raw chlorella can be stabilized when dried, allowing it to be preserved for a long time. In this method the concentrated chlorella solution is sprayed into a hot air stream, forming small droplets that dry instantly. The result is dried chlorella in powder form, having the appearance of vivid green seaweed or powdered green tea. Powdered chlorella is very stable, and if preserved under suitable conditions will suffer a relatively minimum decline in quality even after several years.

  10. Chlorella Tableting

Once raw powder is pulverized, it becomes Sun Chlorella A. Sun Chlorella’A̶ is manufactured in accordance with the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards applied to medicine production in order to produce safe and reliable products our customers can use with confidence. In complying with the GMP, we evaluate and conduct inspections on visual appearance and weight; we meticulously test for contaminants and bacteria consistently through manufacturing. Rigorous quality control is ensured by our own standards for important chlorella components, which are stricter than government standards. Instead of using chemicals to process our tablets and granules, we use press machines and other other natural methods. We double-inspect our products both in-house and at public institutions, and once our products pass these inspections, they are then tightly sealed in our lightproof packages to become Sun Chlorella ‘A’. As evidenced above, the health and safety of our customers is our #1 goal – a goal we believe that can only be achieved through product integrity.

The Sun Chlorella Difference (Dyno®-Mill™)

If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery…

then Sun Chlorella is clearly today’s most praised chlorella product on the market. Seeing is believing. Take a look at these microscopic images of other chlorella brands and compare them to ours. You will see that the difference is clear! With the other chlorella brands, you can clearly see the cell walls are still intact. This makes it virtually impossible for your body to digest and absorb chlorella’s powerful nutrients, which are still locked inside. With Sun Chlorella, the cell walls have been pulverized. Therefore, your body has instant access to this nutritional bounty.

In fact, common’broken cell’ chlorella has been shown to contain as little as one percent’broken’ cells, which means your body is unable to utilize the powerful nutrients chlorella has to offer. With our exclusive patented DYNO®-Mill processing method, Sun Chlorella is the only chlorella on the market to contain 99% pulverized chlorella. And because we pulverize the outer cell wall so thoroughly, your body receives all the powerful nutrients and the many health benefits of Sun Chlorella.

Since 1969, Sun Chlorella Corporation has been producing chlorella products and have seen a lot of imitators try marketing gimmicks to make their products look better than ours. But once you get past all the hype, one fact remains: Sun Chlorella is the best. With all the conflicting information out there, it’s understandable that the average health enthusiast would get a little confused.

As the industry leader, Sun Chlorella USA wants to set the record straight. We believe that once you see for yourself, you’ll discover how other chlorella products pale in comparison.

Despite the claims of many other companies, not all chlorella products are the same. While many claim to have methods that break through the tough outer cell wall, research has shown that their methods are not as effective.

Is chlorella the same as spirulina?

Unlike spirulina, chlorella is a complete unicellular organism, and the richest source of chlorophyll on earth.

Whilst both are natural algae, spirulina contains a blue green pigment and chlorella is emerald green. Chlorella only grows in fresh water, which means that unlike sprirulina, it contains little or no salt or iodine.

Both algae are recognised for a wide range of health benefits. Traditionally chlorella has been used for promoting the normal function of the immune system and the high yield of chlorophyll was thought to be a natural detox/cleanser. Spirulina is well known for its yield of fats and proteins and is considered to be good for fighting disease.
